Frequently asked questions

‘WHAT DOES A COUNSELLOR DO?’

Listening is a large part of what a counsellor will do.  The idea is to allow the client the space to talk and then reflect back on their understanding of what has been said.  A counsellor will make sure the clients have defined the problem areas in their own terms and then help them define what to do next.

‘WHAT PROBLEMS CAN I TALK ABOUT?’

Any kinds of problems – there are no hard and fast rules.  If something is troubling you it can be worth spending time thinking about why this could be happening.

‘WILL THE COUNSELLOR GIVE ME ADVICE?’

Counsellors do not give advice.  The purpose is to help the clients make their own decisions.

Frequently asked questions

‘HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I HAVE TO COME TO?’

This depends on the specific needs of the clients.  Some people stay in counselling for a few weeks, some clients take longer, the idea is to go at the client’s pace.  Counselling works best when clients attend on a weekly basis.

‘HOW LONG DOES A SESSION LAST FOR?’

A session lasts for a maximum of 55 minutes.

‘DOES ATTENDING COUNSELLING MEAN ADMITTING FAILURE?’

No.  It means you are willing to work on your relationship and put the effort into dealing with issues that may be causing problems.
